Heritage Centre Manager - Tavistock Guildhall Centre

Heritage Centre Manager - Tavistock Guildhall Centre
Employer: Tavistock Heritage Trust
Salary: 24000
Location: Tavistock, Devon

Tavistock Guildhall Centre is opening later this year following a £1.8m redevelopment to transform the town’s historic Guildhall building into a new visitor interpretation centre which will serve as the Eastern Gateway to the Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site (WHS).

Tavistock Heritage Trust (the Trust) will be running the Guildhall Centre through a partnership arrangement with the building’s owner, Tavistock Town Council. The Trust already runs the town’s Visitor Information Centre, which will move to the Guildhall once building works are completed.

We now seek an enthusiastic Heritage Centre Manager to manage the day-to-day operation of the Guildhall and Visitor Information Centre and the volunteers who will be running it. You will be responsible for ensuring that all visitors receive a warm welcome to the Guildhall and that they are provided with the information and advice to make the most of their visit.

You should have experience of working with and managing volunteers, and be keen to develop and maximise the income-generating potential of the Guildhall’s operations. A background in tourism or visitor services management in the heritage sector would be an advantage, as would experience of organising events and developing and managing schools’ learning activities. Experience working for a charity (especially one with an active board of trustees) would also be a benefit. Ultimately, since this role is new and quite diverse, we are open to applications from candidates from a range of backgrounds. General skills, personality and attitude will be as important in the selection process as experience.

Normal hours of work will be 9.00am – 5.00pm Tuesday to Saturday with some flexible working to cover evening and weekend events.

The role will be for two years initially, with significant potential for it to become permanent, dependent on the Trust’s/postholder’s success in developing the Guildhall’s income streams.

For full job details and an application form contact Geri Parlby, Chair of Tavistock Heritage Trust, at geri.parlby@heritageintavistock.org or call 01822 852102.

Applications must be submitted by email using the application form.
