Head of Public Engagement

Head of Public Engagement
Employer: Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
Salary: Salary £51-56k (band F)
Location: Edinburgh, Scotland

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the world’s top botanic gardens in one of the world’s most beautiful capital cities. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is looking for a new Head of Public Engagement, to be based at our Inverleith site in Edinburgh. With responsibility for public engagement across RBGE’s four gardens – Edinburgh, Dawyck in the Scottish Borders, Benmore in Argyll and Logan in Dumfries & Galloway – you’ll lead and directly manage our public engagement team, and work closely with the Curators and teams in each garden.

You’ll be responsible for four key areas of public engagement: the programming of public events and exhibitions, including our new arts strategy; our extensive community engagement programme; visitor experience/interpretation at the four sites; and the management of volunteering across the organisation. As part of the Enterprise and Communication division, you’ll work closely with the visitor welcome, marketing and communications and Botanic Trading Company teams to deliver ambitious audience development, visitor number and income targets. As the organisation’s key lead on public engagement, you’ll also work closely with colleagues across RBGE, particularly in the Science and Horticulture & Learning divisions, and as part of our senior management team.

On top of this, we are about to launch one of the most ambitious capital projects in our 350 year history. As a key part of this you’ll be specifically responsible for commissioning and delivering a new interpretation masterplan for the four gardens, and developing a new visitor experience for our glasshouses in Edinburgh.

We are looking for someone with the experience, energy and drive to join us at this exciting time of change and growth for RBGE. You’ll need to have previous experience in developing and delivering a successful public engagement programme, and have a passion for engaging with diverse audiences and exploring new ideas. You’ll need to be able to manage budgets as well as a multidisciplinary team, and be commercially minded with good influencing and negotiating skills.
