Interpretation Manager - Royal Parks
Hyde Park, London

If you are creative, driven and have a background in developing visitor interpretation strategies, this is an exciting opportunity to shape how millions of visitors interact with some of the most iconic sites in London.

About Us

Created in March 2017, The Royal Parks is a charity that supports and manages 5,000 acres of historic parkland across London.

We look after eight of London’s largest open spaces; Hyde Park, The Green, Richmond, Greenwich, St James’s, Bushy and The Regent’s Parks, and Kensington Gardens. We also manage other important open spaces in the capital including Brompton Cemetery, Victoria Tower Gardens, Canning Green and Poet’s Corner.

Our Visitor Interpretation Vision

Our parks are some of the most visited attractions in the UK, bringing in over 77 million visitors each year. We mean different things to different people at different times.

Building on the pillars of nature, history, heritage, health and wellbeing, we want to create meaningful stories that engage with our visitors emotionally and provoke curiosity in our unique park environments. We want to encourage visitors to share their own stories and memories of their park experiences – what their park means to them.

As a relatively new charity, we are now at the point where we are ready to develop a visitor interpretation strategy and achieve these ambitions. As such, we are looking for an Interpretation Manager to join us on a 12 month contract.

The Benefits

- Salary of up to £46,000 per annum
- Pension
- Work from a stunning site in Hyde Park
- 26 days’ holiday plus Bank Holidays

This is an incredible opportunity to influence how visitors experience our beautiful green spaces, right in the heart of the capital.

You will play an integral role in how millions of people interact with our parks, whether they are visiting our extraordinary palaces, taking part in an event, just visiting to walk the dog or catching up with friends.

Our teams are passionate, dedicated and driven to deliver only the best experiences, so if you think you would fit in with this amazing group of professionals and make an impact, this is the role for you.

Your Role

As the Interpretation Manager, you will develop our interpretation strategy and wayfinding strategy.

You will create ways to connect our audiences to the nature, landscapes and heritage of our park. Alongside this, you will look to improve our signage across the parks – currently signage is inconsistent and off-brand, and this needs to change to enhance our overall visitor experience.

During your contract, you will:

- Conduct detailed audience segmentation research
- Develop our overall interpretation principles and approach
- Deliver a detailed interpretive plan, including costings, timings and resource implications
- Complete a full wayfinding audit and assessment across our digital and physical platforms
- Provide a wayfinding manual which includes designs for every possible sign we may need

About You

To join us as an Interpretation Manager, you will need:

- Experience of developing visitor interpretation strategies for heritage or cultural organisations, museums or parks
- A proven track record of creative leadership, with the ability to exploit the potential of different narrative environments, physical objects and digital technologies
- An understanding of audiences and audience segmentation with demonstrable experience of putting the needs of the visitor first
- Excellent knowledge of interpretive theory and interpretive media in the cultural, heritage or museums sector
- An understanding of the access and diversity needs of a range of different audiences
- The ability to think laterally and strategically about how best practice interpretation can be embedded in our parks
- A qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant subject, such as urban or town planning

Other organisations may call this role Visitor Interpretation Manager, Visitor Engagement Manager, Attraction Interpretation Manager, Heritage Interpretation Manager, or Participation & Interpretation Manager.

This is a full time role, working 36 hours per week. Applicants looking to work part time will also be considered.

The closing date for applications is the 12th November 2019, with interviews scheduled to be held on the 22nd November 2019.
