Programme Manager: Display and Storage

Programme Manager: Display and Storage
Employer: The British Museum
Salary: £47,787
Location: London

Can you help to transform the display and storage of one of the world’s greatest collections for the 21st century? It’s an exciting challenge and this newly-created role is your opportunity to take it on.

The British Museum collection is the most comprehensive survey in existence of the material cultures of humanity over two million years. The Museum’s developing masterplan provides the opportunity for a new comprehensive approach to its display and storage, transforming the way in which visitors and researchers make use of the collection. In our galleries this will mean the development of a coherent, historical narrative that addresses the story of humanity through objects. For collections not on display, this means the delivery of researchable stores that encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration, and enable efficient and effective access to the collection for researchers based in the UK and across the world.

You will be responsible for taking forward the development and delivery of new strategic plans in these areas, delivering major cross-museum projects, and supporting the effective management of an ambitious and complex change programme.

You will collaborate with excellent colleagues with a broad and diverse range of skills and knowledge, providing a focus for thinking around the development of new narratives for display. You will build specialist teams to design and deliver an estate-wide re-organisation of the collection in storage.

Key areas of responsibility:

You will contribute to the development of long-term plans for the future of the Museum’s estate in the areas of permanent gallery display and collection storage. Working closely with the Deputy Director responsible for the collection, you will deliver a long-term plan and curatorial briefs for permanent gallery display. You will contribute to plans for the future distribution of collection storage across the estate, and oversee the delivery of a major collection move programme, managing dependencies between projects and ensuring that effective governance and control structures are in place.

Person specification

The ideal candidate will have experience of developing and implementing strategies in the culture or heritage sector, along with a track record of managing complex projects to time and budget. Excellent spoken and written communication skills, and the ability to tailor complex information for different audiences are essential. The successful post-holder will have the confidence to inspire positive stakeholder engagement with major change projects, and manage with an inclusive and consultative style.
