The Retail Operations department is responsible for generating income and profit for the Bodleian Libraries, through on-site sales in our two shops, online at, and through our wholesale and licensing businesses.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Buying and Merchandising Manager, helping to shape and manage a unique product offer that help reflect the Bodleian’s diverse collections.

Reporting to the Head of Retail Operations, you will be responsible for the product selection of books and non-bespoke gift lines, the efficient management of retail stock, undertaking sales and KPI analysis, reporting, placing orders and liaising with suppliers. You will also be responsible for the line management and development of the Retail Operations Administrator, Retail Merchandising Administrator and the Wholesale & Ecommerce Assistant.

You will have previously worked in a retail buying or merchandising management role, and be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of the retail buying process. You will also be able to demonstrate team leadership, excellent communication skills, attention to detail and a working knowledge of retail stock management and POS systems and be confident in the use of MS Office, especially Excel. Experience of wholesale or brand licensing desirable.

Some lifting, carrying and moving of stock may be required. Please note our working environment includes confined spaces and a basement-level stockroom.

This is a permanent, full time post.
