The Courtauld Institute of Art is the UK's leading institution for teaching and research into the History of Art and the conservation of paintings, and is also home to one of the finest small art museums in the world.

The Courtauld seeks to appoint full time maternity cover for our Volunteer Manager, a post responsible for coordinating all volunteer-centred activities over the next four years as part of Courtauld Connects, our ambitious project that will realise Samuel Courtauld’s vision of “Art for all.” The maternity cover post will be based at Somerset House but will involve remote supervisory work and some travel.

This post will be offered on a full-time basis for a 9-month maternity cover, with the possibility of being extended to 12 months.

As a critical member of the Digital Media team you’ll be taking over responsibilities for managing the volunteer-led aspects of the digitisation of our photographic library collections. This project has already been well established through a pilot project involving over 100 new community volunteers working in two daily shifts of 6 to 8 people. We now wish to expand our digitisation activities by recruiting up to 200 new volunteers to fill shifts of up to 18 volunteers each day. Their tasks, supervised by Courtauld staff, include photography, cataloguing, transcription, conservation, outreach and digital communications.

Alongside the digitisation activities the Volunteer Manager will be responsible for the recruitment and management volunteers for national and local research festivals taking place under the umbrella of Res|Fest. They will also act in an advisory and consultancy role to support the development of our regional volunteering projects involving at least 80 community volunteers, the strategy for which has already been agreed in principle across 9 of our partner organisations.

You’ll need exceptional communication skills, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with a diverse range of people, an empathy with volunteers and an understanding of their needs, the capacity to inspire and motivate others, the ability to deal with information in a confidential manner and respond with sensitivity, good organisational skills, and a flexible and non-judgemental approach to people and work.
