The Gallery Decant Project will see the Museum of Science & Industry decant a number of galleries and reorganise objects into storage for future use.
Working to an efficient programme, the postholder will carry out preventive and interventive conservation required for the project to appropriate SMG standards and in line with legislation, including condition checking and documentation, object hazard management, security and access, movement, and storage.

Purpose of the Job

The Gallery Decant Project Team will play an exciting role in delivering a new world class Special Exhibition Gallery at the Museum of Science & Industry. The Project Team will help to achieve the museums ambitions by decanting the long standing Gas, Electricity, Computing, Energy for the Future and Underground Manchester Galleries. There will be the opportunity to thoroughly document, clean, prepare and pack the collections for storage at both the MSI site, and the facilities for large objects storage available at the Science Museum Group’s main large object stores at Wroughton, Wiltshire.

Working to an efficient programme, the postholder will carry out preventive and interventive conservation required for the project to appropriate SMG standards and in line with legislation, including condition checking and documentation, object hazard management, security and access, movement, and storage.

Key Deliverables/Accountabilities

Carry out rapid surveys of the collections as directed by the Project Manager to assess conservation needs and aid work planning and to compile reports to advise managers of the results.
Participate in safe management and awareness of hazards within the collections; complying with current H&S regulations, in-house policies and safe working practices.
Carry out conservation of objects required for the projects as prioritised by the post holder’s Project Manager, organising their own time to deliver work on time and to budget complying with SMG guidelines and standards, and statutory requirements.
Advise the Project Manager and other colleagues (e.g. curatorial/collections information) on conservation issues connected with objects under treatment to ensure that the project is completed on time and to SMG standards.
Pack and move mixed material objects of a variety of sizes in various condition states, using handling equipment and vehicles and supervising colleagues and pre-arranged contractors as necessary.
Carry out reorganisation of object stores at MSI as directed by the Project Manager, to meet short term operational needs and ensuring long term efficient and effective storage of the collections
Supervise colleagues working with the collections when the Project Manager is not present.
Provide regular progress updates and reports to the Project Manager
Prepare condition reports with images for objects and input this information accurately into the collections management database.
Maintain professional knowledge and expertise in object conservation related to the museum’s collections.
Assist in the general administration of the Project, to ensure that this is done in an environmentally sound and economical manner.
